The NHS

Regular eye examinations are very important and are recommended every two years. Not only can regular tests reveal problems with your sight, but also underlying health problems. This is why the NHS provide free eye tests for qualifying customers.

The NHS may also provide vouchers to offset the cost of any prescribed spectacles or contact lenses.

Qualifying Customers for NHS Sight Tests

  • Under 16, or under 19 and in full time education
  • Aged 60 or over
  • Registered blind or partially sighted
  • Diagnosed as having diabetes or glaucoma
  • 40 or over with a first degree relative with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
  • Prescribed a complex lens

You are also entitled to a free NHS sight test if you (or your partner) are receiving the following benefits or credits:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (not contribution based)
  • Working Families’ Tax Credit and you are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
  • Disabled Person’s Tax Credit and you are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
  • NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2) and you are named on the Certificate.

Qualifying Customers for NHS Optical Vouchers

  • Under 16, or under 19 and in full time education
  • Prescribed a complex lens

You are also entitled to an NHS optical voucher if you (or your partner) are receiving the following benefits or credits:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (not contribution based)
  • Working Families’ Tax Credit and you are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
  • Disabled Person’s Tax Credit and you are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
  • NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2) and you are named on the Certificate.

If you or your partner are named on a NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) you might also get help.
